In 2008, a group of historical musicologists from Toulouse University, ethnomusicologists from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and professional musicians from Ensemble Gilles Binchois gathered to create the FABRICA project, led by Philippe Canguilhem. Dedicated since its origin to study polyphonic practices connected to plainchant in western Europe, their first practical realisation consisted in the study, translation, and edition of a manuscript treatise on improvised counterpoint (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Esp. 219, written by Vicente Lusitano ca. 1550)
